Nowadays, 55% of the world’s population live in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase to 68% by 2050, according to the United Nations estimates. As cities grow, they face major issues such as traffic congestion, severe air pollution, high levels of greenhouse gas emissions, overpopulation and other continuous growing challenges. Digitalisation is seen as an important tool to overcome these challenges and help cities to reinvent their daily operations and meet the sustainable development goals. The transition towards a smart city, in terms of technology, implies, first, that the city’s infrastructure must be upgraded to provide network connectivity. LuxTurrim5G is a Nokia driven ecosystem project that creates the digital backbone for a smart city, based on Smart Pole networks that combine fast 5G connectivity, sensors and a secure data platform, providing new data-driven services.
